LET'S GET DOWN TO BASICS!

The best thing that you could ever do for your skin care routine seems like the simplest answer!

It's to understand your skin.

When you understand your skin type, why your skin is struggling to achieve that beautiful glow, and how you can work to address those concerns, then you can feel confident in choosing skin care products that work for you.

Here at JOËLLE MARTINE, we've developed our line with every skin type and every skin concern in mind.

That being said, understanding your skin and what works (and doesn't work) can seem like a monumental task.

We've created this guide to make your skin care journey just a little bit easier.

Here's how to use this guide:

Let's get started!

what is skin care & why is it important?

When we are talking about skin care, we mean the pampering and routine daily care of our largest organ - the skin!

Your skin is delicate and takes more damage than you can see on a daily basis. This leads to wrinkles, redness, dark spots, sagging, and can lead to the development of skin conditions or even skin cancer. You can help protect your skin from this by taking a few minutes at the beginning and end of your day to apply products that fight these concerns.

With JOËLLE MARTINE skin care, we are talking about the best of science and the best of nature combined to nurture and heal your skin at the deepest level and to maintain this throughout your life.

Ok, but why should I care about a skin care routine?

Having a daily skin care routine has a myriad of benefits, some that are visible and some that are not.

Getting into the habit of a skin care routine while you are young can help slow down the signs of aging and prevent serious skin care conditions from rearing their heads later in life.

Even if you aren't starting young, the right skin care products can turn back the clock.

Our products are designed to target fine lines and wrinkles, as well as to plump the skin

Used daily, this can make anyone look and feel younger!

Studies show that having a special skin care routine can even boost your mood.

It's one small, but powerful, thing that you can do every day to practice self-care

It can be empowering to do nice things for your body and to reap the benefits from it.

Even something as simple as applying a weekly masque can help you destress, unwind, and chillax after a hectic week.

Don't have the time to do some in depth research right now?

That's okay! You can always start with our product recommendation quiz.

Remember, it is not a replacement for actually getting to know your skin and how our products can work with it - but it is a nice place to start!

Where do i start?

So you are ready to start your skin care journey... Great!

But what do you need to know before you begin?

Before you decide the types of skin care products that you want in your routine or get caught up in all of the lovely essential oils, it's important to know your skin type and to determine the concerns that you want to address.

Before you decide the types of skin care products that you want in your routine or get caught up in all of the lovely essential oils, it's important to know your skin type and to determine the concerns that you want to address.

Everyone's skin reacts differently to different products and treatments. What works for your friends and family members may not work for you. The first routine that you settle on may not work either. That's okay! That's why it is called a journey and we want to be here for you every step of the way.

To determine your skin type, think about how your skin feels and what it looks like a few hours after a shower, before you put any make up or products on. This can change over time, so you might want to take some notes in a journal so that you can see which direction your skin is trending in.

Skin types

Skin type is broken down into four main categories, followed by different skin conditions that you may or may not have in addition to your usual skin type.

Normal Skin Type

Your skin is not too dry, nor is it too oily. You may have a few spots of acne from time to time, but nothing that gets out of hand or stays for too long.

  • No, or few imperfections

  • No severe sensitivity or redness

  • Radiant complexion

  • No flakes or dry spots

  • No oily patches

Dry skin can be caused by your genes, aging, hormonal changes, the weather (such as wind, sun, or cold), UV radiation from tanning beds, excessive indoor heating, long hot baths/showers, certain medications, or the ingredients in your current soaps/cosmetics/cleansers.

Some ways that you can combat this is to: take shorter showers/baths and make sure they are not scalding hot, don't over scrub your skin, use mild soaps or cleansers, apply a moisturizer daily and reapply as needed throughout the day.

Oily Skin Type

Your skin is oily overall, not just in specific areas. You may find that your makeup smears easily or you have a sheen under harsh light. It looks like you've just finished working out when you haven't even stepped outside yet.

  • Enlarged pores

  • Shiny complexion

  • Blackheads, pimples, or other blemishes

  • Enlarged pores

  • Shiny complexion

  • Blackheads, pimples, or other blemishes

Oily skin can change depending on the time of the year or the weather. Things that can make it worse include puberty, hormonal imbalances, stress, heat, or too much humidity. Sometimes, oily skin can even be dry skin in disguise!

Oil is caused by a build up sebum from your sebaceous glands and is made up of fats. It isn't all bad! Oil keeps your skin and hair moisturized and healthy, but an over abundance of it leaves you feeling icky and clogs your pores.

You can combat this by: washing your skin twice a day and after sweating a lot, using a gentle cleanser and not over-scrubbing your skin, not picking at pimples or blackheads, using products that are "noncomedogenic" - which is just a fancy word meaning that they do not clog your pores.

i know my skin type, what are the steps in a routine?

We think that skin care should be simple, but effective.

Below, we are going to discuss skin care routines, what each product actually is and why you may or may not need it, and what JOËLLE MARTINE product should be used in each step.

There are 3 major steps to every skin care routine.

Everything after that is an add on to address a specific concern or to lock in the three steps that come before it.

STEP 1: Cleanse

If you wear heavy makeup or sunscreen during the day, you may want to look into a makeup-remover that is designed to cut through water-proof/oil-proof eyeliners and foundations, but you can also wash with your cleanser twice.

You should cleanse every morning and every night.

Your cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean, but not stripped.

STEP 2: hydrate

Hydration and Moisturizing are not the same, although they are related. Hydrators increase the water content of the layers of your skin, which makes your skin plump and bouncy. It sinks deep into the skin and is usually very lightweight.

Moisturizers trap and seal in moisture to build up the skin's protective barrier, prevent water loss, and keep the skin soft and smooth. they tend to be your thicker serums.

You need both for the perfect complexion.

The final step to your basic routine should be moisturizing.

You want to lock in all that goodness you just put into your skin.

Your moisturizer should leave your skin feeling smooth and soft, but not oily.

so, is that all i need for my skin?

These are the starting products that you should have in your routine, but they are most likely not the only products you will want to help treat any conditions you might be dealing with.

Let's talk about exfoliation, toners, mini-peels, masques, and oils.

Exfoliators / scrubs

When we are talking about exfoliation, we are either talking about acids or the physical acts of scrubbing the skin to remove dead skin.

Some of our products contain gentle cocktails of AHA's, BHA's, ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acids that work to remove the dead skin sitting on the top layer, to reveal the healthy new skin cells beneath. These products work for you even after you've stopped washing your face.

Scrubs may also contain ingredients that work after you're through applying them, but they also work to exfoliate as you gently massage them onto your skin in a circular motion. You want to be careful not to scrub too aggressively. These might be best to only use once a day, three times a week until your skin adjusts to them.
If you do go overboard, simply give your skin 2 weeks without using your scrub to return to its normal state and try again.

Some exfoliants are meant to be used only a few times a week, so be sure to read the instructions before you go overboard and dry your skin out!
If you do, give your skin two weeks without exfoliation to let it heal and come back to its normal state of being.

toners

Toners help to remove dirt and grime from your skin before you do your cleanse.
When you use a toner regularly, it can shrink your pores or help tighten the skin to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Most store-bought toners can be over-drying, which is why our toners always contain our moisturizing Emu Nectar.

Toners are not necessary for your routine, but if you find that you wear a lot of make-up (or heavy and stubborn make-up), you might want to use one before you Cleanse.

mini-peels

We won't be going over full-blown peels here as that is something you should always discuss with your skin care professional first! But there are plenty of products that offer you the benefits of a peel, while still being gentle enough that you do not need to worry about causing damage to your skin.

So, first, what exactly is a peel and why do you need it?

A peel, also known as a chemical peel in a professional spa or a mini-peel that you can take home with you, is a cocktail of acids that breaks down dead skin cells and sloughs them off, revealing the healthy, new skin layer below.

When used regularly, this can cause dull skin to be brighter and tighter. It reduces the look of fine lines and wrinkles and can clear acne and blackheads. Mini-peels can also address hyperpigmentation, so it works for those with sun spots and other unwanted dark spots.

These products can vary in strength and should always be used according to their directions to avoid over-drying the skin or causing burns.

Typically, these are your "nighttime" products as they work best if used when your body is naturally turning over cells.

masques

A masque might seem like an "extra" in your skin care routine, but they can be very beneficial when used even just once a week! Think of it like a "detox" for your skin.

While most companies have a specific concern that their masques target, our masques are hand-crafted to target several different concerns at a time. Due to their powder form, they can even be mixed together to create a super-masque!

JOËLLE MARTINE masques are mixed as needed in order to insure that you are receiving the freshest organic ingredients without the preservatives. This means that they have a long shelf-life as well!
Our masques can be used daily or a few times a week, whenever you have at least 15 minutes to put one on and relax - but they can also be worn for a whole hour of goodness!

oils

"Don't I want less oil?"

We hear you! But our oils will not cause you to walk away feeling slick and shiny! They truly function as a noncomedogenic (oily skin types listen up!) moisturizer.

These oils are made of the finest, six-times refined, cold pressed, and purified, Emu Nectar.

But what does that mean?
Put simply, it means we've scoured the world to bring you the highest quality Emu Nectar out there. It's thick and creamy, smooth and nourishing.

Emu Nectar has been used by aboriginal tribes for centuries and it is now being studied again as it heals your skin and causes other products to penetrate at the deepest layer. Its molecules are so small that it doesn't get stuck in the epidermis, or even in the dermis. It penetrates clear to the bone and is good, not only for your skin, but for your health as well. We love it so much, it's our Point of Difference. It's in almost all of our products!

Our oils have been infused with organic essential oils for their various properties in healing your skin concerns, but also for their aromatherapy benefits as well.

You should apply our 1oz oils as a pea-sized amount, morning and night, before your moisturizer.

step 1: remove make-up

Our Cleansing Water & Toner is the perfect product to cut through heavy make-ups. Shake the Cleansing Water and apply it to a cotton pad and then wipe it across your skin. You may need two cotton pads depending on how thick your make-up is.

It does sting the eyes, however, so if you struggle to get your eye makeup off, try using one of our oils. It removes makeup and promotes healthy and strong hair growth so it's great for your eyelashes.

step 3: clear skin cocktail

If you use Clear Skin Cocktail, this is where you would wet a cotton pad and apply it to your face.

This product is our strongest mini-peel so be sure to read the instructions!

Most people find that they can use this product 2-3 times a week, while others with perpetually oily skin can use it once a day! (Even if that is the case, always work up to it. Always start with 2-3 times a week).

You can masque every day or only once a week. There's no wrong answer! You can mix up your masque schedule or even mix them together depending on your concern you are addressing.

Ok, so what is it exactly that is treating my concerns?

Good question!

What you are looking for in your product is the "active ingredients".

Exactly what it sounds like, these are the ingredients that are active on your skin. They are not binders, thickeners, or fragrances.  Most active ingredients will be on a product label, but, in general the FDA doesn't test skin care products before they are released so new studies are being done constantly!

JOËLLE MARTINE will never hide our ingredients from you.

We do the heavy-lifting and research each ingredient in depth before agreeing to put it into our products so that we know it's good for your skin and for your health.

We do not use parabens, SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), dyes, or fragrances. Instead, we rely on our natural ingredients to product beautiful color and smells. And we never, ever test on our animal friends!

Our Key Ingredients

There are many ingredients in our products that have benefits that span multiple concerns.

Let's break down our favorite ingredients and tell you why they're top of our list:

emu nectar

Ultra-fine, six-times refined, cold pressed Emu Nectar! This is what drags each product down to the deepest level.

It is comprised of oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, and antioxidants. These fight inflammation, dry skin, and water loss. In addition to its moisturizing capabilities, emu oil has positive effects on collagen production.

Collagen is one of the compounds that keeps your skin elastic, plump, and wrinkle-free. Emu oil’s antioxidant properties can also target any signs of aging caused by oxidative stress.

It's Omega 3, 6, and 9 strengthens and promotes healthy hair growth for your eyelashes and eyebrows.

It is currently being studied for its ability to heal third degree burns! This is why our founder, Suzi Provenche, fell in love with Emu Nectar - you can read more about that here - and decided it should be in almost all of her products!

We could go on and on, but this is the star of the show!

Vitamin-c

Brighter, tighter, and dewy!

When we’re young, vitamin-C levels in skin’s outermost two layers (epidermis and dermis) are abundant, but as we age, these levels naturally deplete. Also know as ascorbic acid, or l-ascorbic acid, vitamin-C is the most researched in terms of beneficial effects on the skin. It is commonly found in well-formulated skin care products, but we are proud to offer it in a more powerful format - a powder. This powder is so fine, it will penetrate deep into the skin and be absorbed to increase efficacy.

Vitamin-C’s benefits for your skin are vast, including its ability to even out skin tone and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While this powerhouse ingredient is well-known for its skin-brightening benefits, research also shows it can shield skin from the visible impacts of environmental stressors, including free radical damage.

When used, vitamin-C stays in your skin for up to 3 days! That's a whole lot of benefit for such a tiny powder!

Our Vitamin-C Polishing Crystal Scrub can be used on the face and/or body, but our Everything Scrub also contains vitamin-C. Never use both in the same area. The Crystal Scrub is more concentrated and should be used 2-3 times a week, whereas the Everything Scrub can be used daily.

Oats

Did you know that oats are a natural cleanser and gentle exfoliator?

Oats are loaded with antioxidants, nutrients, vitamins, and lipids - but these are not just your run-of-the-mill breakfast cereal oats!

These oats are finely ground down whole-bran oats which protect your skin and provide a barrier of moisture. It contains anti-inflammatory vitamin-E to fix red, itchy, dry patches and calm angry acne. Oats contains flavonoids, which help to absorb damaging ultraviolet-A (UVA) rays. Flavonoids can even protect your skin from harsh pollutants and chemicals.

Due to its gentle nature, oats are good for every skin type - even sensitive skin types especially people who have eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea. That's why, if you are suffering from these conditions, we recommend you give our Oat Cleanser or Rose Oat Cleanser a try.

Is there anything I should know about caring for my skin of color?

People of color are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation. You may be more likely to develop melasma or post-acne dark spots, or scarring after inflammatory skin issues such as acne, psoriasis, or eczema.

This can be especially frustrating when looking at treatments that are recommended for women with lighter skin - like laser treatments. It might make you wary to try certain brightening skin care products.

But skin care has come a long way for skin of color in recent years!

Vitamin-C is perfectly safe for treating any pesky dark spots you may have.

JOËLLE MARTINE serves women from all over the world and we are happy to say that our skin care line was designed with everyone in mind.

We're here to help you achieve your perfect glow.

I'm pregnant (or am planning on becoming pregnant soon).  Can I use all of your products?

Typically, when you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you may need to temporarily stop using some skin care products. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, pregnant people should avoid using retinoids. You may also need to limit your use of salicylic acid.

These suggestions are based on an absence of conclusive evidence that they are safe rather than having evidence that they are harmful. Above all, it's important to check in with your doctor or dermatologist before using something on your skin while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Our products to avoid are: Clean & Tone Cleanser, Clear Skin Cocktail, Moisturizing Night Serum, and Girl's BFF.

Instead, we recommend switching to Oat Cleanser or Rose Oat Cleanser, Day Serum, and our Organic Rose Petal Masque Powder.

Not only will these products keep your skin glowing, you'll also be able to breathe in a relaxing essential oil to help you through your pregnancy and the early months of raising your baby.
